Math 412/501 Linear Algebra


General Information, Syllabus, Assessment and Test Dates

Undergraduate Catalog Description: Advanced linear algebra, including linear transformations and duality, elementary canonical forms, rational and Jordan forms, inner product spaces, unitary operators, normal operators and spectral theory. Prerequisites: Math 411 and Math 315.

Objectives

  • Develop a thorough understanding of the concepts and techniques of linear algebra
  • Further develop the ability to apply your knowledge to solve problems
  • Further develop the ability to understand an axiomatic development of mathematics and hence to understand and write proofs
  • (Further) develop skills for working effectively with others on mathematics problems

Chapter 2: Linear Transformations and Matrices (2.1 - 2.6)
Chapter 3: Elementary Matrix Operations and Systems of Linear Equations
Chapter 4: Determinants
Chapter 5: Diagonalization (Omit 5.3)
Chapter 7: Canonical Forms
Chapter 6: Inner Product Spaces (Omit 6.8)
