My research is in the branch of algebra known as group theory. Group theory is the study of sets which have defined on them a binary operation satisfying several simple properties. The subject has its roots (pun intended) in the study of the solution of polynomial equations. (Visit The Development of Group Theory for an excellent brief history of group theory to 1900.) Since the middle of the 19th century group theory has flourished as a subject of study in its own right, and has found widespread application throughout mathematics and in physics and chemistry. My own interests are in discrete infinite groups, with publications in the study of permutability properties.
